What to know about IELTS Preparation

English language is one of the most versatile languages that is spoken and written in almost every country in the world. What is IELTS?

Short for International English Language Testing System is a standardized testing procedure that checks the proficiency in handling the english language for non-speakers. This is one of the most widely used testing procedures for determining the level of english proficiency.

IELTS testing procedures are accepted in many academic institutions in countries such as USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, etc. It is the only English language test to be approved by UK Visas and Immigrations.

Why is it important?

Normally IELTS are categorized into two which are IELTS Academic, intended for admission to colleges higher studies and General Training, intended for employment purposes.

How is it performed?

The tests involve 4 stages which are listening, reading, writing and speaking. The duration of the test comprises of 2 hours and 45 minutes. Each stage is further divided into modules, each of which will have a set of tasks with a certain time limit and guidelines.

There are no marks issued for IELTS, only band scores are issued on how well you have performed each stage in the test. The total score is generated by calculating the average of the individual points of each stage and rounding up.

The point scale contains ranges between 0.0-9.0  where 0 represents that the person has not assessed the test and 9.0 represents the maximum point for your language skills. Once you successfully complete the test, you will be given an IELTS test report that highlights your band score, the type of IELTS, and your details.

The band score is the basic requirement that would make you eligible for employment or academic purposes in most countries that supports IELTS. On average most countries require a band score of 6 as a minimum in order to work or do your studies in the respective country.

However, the band score requirement can vary on the basis of your purpose, the country you intend to go etc. In the USA, the highest band score requirement for the University of Columbia is 8.5.

IELTS is supported by 140 countries such that the users can take their test any of the supported countries and up to 1220 locations are supported. 48 test dates are available per year for Academic IELTS, whereas 24 dates per year are available for General Training IELTS.

Each test centre offers tests up to four times a month depending on local demand. The Academic version is available on all 48 dates per year and the General Training version is available on 24 dates.
