What is NCLEX?

The NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) is a national examination for the licensing of nurses in the United States and Canada. The two different types are NCLEX PN and NCLEX RN.
These NCLEX Exams are thoughtfully provided in the CAT format. Computerized Adaptive Tests are provided to design the level of difficulty based on the test taker. So your next questions would depend on how you answered the previous question. If you answered the question wrong, then your next question is most likely to be easier than the previous one, and if you answer correctly, it is likely to be harder than the previous one. Such a mechanism attempts to measure the individual capabilities of students based on this simple algorithm. All the questions would be related to nursing itself, and hence the ability of the individual is selectively assessed.

Eligibility Criteria for NCLEX:

  • In order to appear for the exam, you must apply for a nursing license first from your State Board of Nursing and then the boards will decide your eligibility to write the exam.

Levels of NCLEX:

The two levels of NCLEX examinations are
  1. NCLEX RN (National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse) and;
  2. NCLEX PN (National Council Licensure Examination-Practical Nurse).

NCLEX RN

The NCLEX RN examination only has to answer one question: if it’s safe enough for you to be practicing nursing at the entry level. It is however different from any other nursing tests you may have taken in school. While the nursing exams you took in school may be based on knowledge, the NCLEX RN tests questions your abilities, skills along with your previous knowledge from school. You will be judged on whether you are able to make nursing judgments during critical situations.
