International English Language Testing System is the world’s most admired English language test. It is conducted by British Council and International Development Program. The IELTS test is offered four times a month and the candidate have the full freedom to choose a test date and convenient test venue all over India. This assessment is trusted and accepted by almost every organisation all over the world. The IELTS test evaluates your potentials in listening, reading, writing and speaking. There are two kinds of the IELTS test:  IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Academic test is meant for students who want a higher learning environment for studying abroad and the later for job seekers that reflect both workplace and social situations. Listening and Speaking are the same for both tests, but the components of the Reading and Writing test differs depending on which test you opt.

Analyse the test formats

Listening : You have to listen four recordings of native English speakers and then required to write answers for a series of questions. The examiner will be looking for verification of your ability to understand the main ideas and comprehensive factual information, the opinions and attitudes of speakers, the purpose of statement and proof of your ability to attend the development of ideas. The recordings are played only once. It comprises a range of accents, including British, Australian, New Zealand, American and Canadian. 30 minutes for listening with an additional 10 minutes for transfering the answers will be allowed to the candidate.

The recordings includes any of the three types of tasks varying from sentence completion, short answer questions, flowchart, table or summary completion, plan, map or diagram labelling, matching a numbered list and to choose from multiple choices.

Reading : Reading test will be different for academic and general sections. 60 minutes will be given for completing 40 answers.

Reading for Academic module - This comprises three long texts ranging from the descriptive and factual to the discursive and analytical. Contents of the reading test is taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers.  They have been opted for general audience and are appropriate for people entering university courses or seeking professional registration. It includes 11 types of tasks to be completed. They are identifying the accuracy of the information that is validating whether it is true or false, completing the sentences with alternatives given, identifying the writer’s claim by understanding the difference of no and not given, matching headings, sentence and features, sentence, summary, note, table, flow-chart and diagram label completion and short answers.

Reading for General module - The difference lies in the source of content for the test from reading for academic module. It includes texts containing social survival, workplace survival and general reading.

Speaking : Speaking test lasts for 11 to 14 minutes comprising of three parts. In part one, the examiner will ask you general or personal questions about yourself and a range of common topics, such as home, family, work, studies and interests. This part lasts for four to five minutes. In part two,  you will be given a card which asks you to talk about a particular topic. You will have one minute to get prepared for the topic before speaking for up to two minutes. The examiner will then begin to ask one or two questions on the same subject. Part 3 - you will be asked follow up questions about the subject in Part 2. These will give you the chance to discuss more clear ideas and issues. This part of the speaking test lasts for four to five minutes to complete.

Writing : 60 minutes will be given for completing the reading test. Writing task of 150 words will be the first section and the second is short essay of 250 words. The first section of academic writing is to summarise a table, chart, graph or a diagram and that of general writing is letter writing.

How each test is assessed?

Listening - One mark is awarded for each correct answers. Since poor spelling and grammatical errors  are considered to be wrong answers due care should be made while transferring the answers.

Reading - The scores out of 40 is translated into the IELTS 9-band scale. Scores are registered in whole bands and half bands.

Writing - Writing test concerns overall clarity and fluency and takes range of vocabulary into account along with the grammatical accuracy.

Speaking - Speaking performances are evaluated by certificated IELTS examiners who holds a relevant teaching qualifications which is approved by the British Council or IDP. The ability to talk with normal levels of continuity, rate and capability to connect ideas and language together is the main concern. The range of vocabulary, grammatical accuracy and pronunciation is evaluated to assess the speaking level of the candidate.
